Until 1984 the championship was an open series for manufacturers of different chassis, engines and tyres. However that championship was phased out and replaced by Formula 3000.. The sole world championship race at the venue was dominated by Stirling Moss, who won from pole position in his Rob Walker-entered Lotus 18-Climax, beating works Lotus driver Innes Ireland by some 38 seconds. Though F1 racing never returned to Riverside, the track continued to operate until 1989 before it was sold off for real estate.

One of my favorite Formula One memories is from the inaugural (and only) Dallas Grand Prix, in 1984, involving my favorite team, the Colin Chapman era Lotus (though by 1984 Chapman had already died) and one of my favorite drivers, Nigel Mansell, forever shattering a stereotype of F1 drivers as prima donnas.

The 1984 season proved to be promising for Team Lotus as the 95Ts were reliable and came very close to winning three races. Senna's talent really came to light in the 97T. He took no less than seven pole positions, two second and two third place finishes and a first at Estoril.
